How to Automate Protocol Assignment

You can easily automate the protocol assignment based on your mouselines. Whether you are setting this up for the first time for your exiting records, or you have a new Mouseline added to your colony, here are the steps to follow:

First, you need to set up a Default Protocol for your Mouselines:

  1. Click the Associations icon and select the Mouseline-Protocol option in the drop down
  2. Select the Mouseline in question
  3. Select the Default Protocol for this Mouseline
  4. Click Save
  5. Repeat for all mouselines in your account

Next, you need to indicate whether you want Protocols to be counted as soon as your pups are born or only at weaning:

  1. Click the Modules menu and then the Protocols icon
  2. Select one Protocol and click Edit (or click on the Protocol Name directly in the list)
  3. In the Count From drop down, select either Birth or Wean
  4. Click Save

NOTE: if you select Birth in the Count From and you have existing unweaned litters in your account, you will need to manually assign the protocol to these pups. For data integrity purposes, the feature works in a forward manner only and does not retroactively modify existing data.

You will see this reflected in two different manners when adding animals to your database:

  1. New Mouse page: when adding new purchased mice, on selecting a Mouseline, the Protocol drop down will be automatically populated with the Default Protocol selected for that Mouseline

  2. Adding / Weaning Pups: depending on what the Count From setting is on the Protocol:
    - if you selected from Birth, then when adding a litter or adding pups to a litter, the Default Protocol of the pup's Mouseline will be automatically assigned to the pups
    - if you selected from Wean, then when weaning a litter, the Default Protocol of the pup's Mouseline will be automatically assigned to the pups
